Here we go again

 Welcome back to the Voice of Golden Words.

Where have I been? Busy doing all sorts of things, but mostly struggling with my health issues, health issues in the family, and so on. Also, to be honest, this blog was started as my way of advancing the cause of the Boy Scouts of America, specifically in the Pony Express Council, narrowed down even further to Camp Geiger. 

I know, it is only March, and while many have been counting the days since Webelos Camp closed last summer, I have not. It was not an easy year last year, not going to lie. I still believe in BSA, and its mission. I also stand behind how that mission is put into play in the Pony Express Council and Camp Geiger. Is it perfect? I would have to say no, but what is perfect but God? All we can do is work within our sphere and ability to influence. 

I generally have not seen how I can influence, as I am not a teacher, or overseeing teachers at camp. I know how to do my job, and think I do a pretty good job executing. I feel that I do provide an example of kindness, and customer service, as well as critical thinking on the operations. I can't believe that I just said that about myself. If you know me, you get it.

And now here we are, gearing up for a new year. Are you ready? I think I am. I have moved forward, and am going to take my own advice, and work within my sphere. I love being on Staff, and am honored greatly by being selected. I am starting to feel like I provide value to the program, and so maybe some self healing going on?

Our first staff  training is the day after tomorrow (I had  to check my clock to see if it had rolled over to Friday yet) I am pumped for it. I look forward to meeting with my staff, and hitting the ground running. I love getting ideas from them, and while our ability to have an impact on product is limited, last year I had a great staff, and they inspired me to truly embrace the BRSF. If you would have asked me four years ago about playing that role, that would have been a big NO.

If you are attending elsewhere, I would invite you to reconsider, or if not, come out for a Wednesday night campfire, or a Thursday night Tapping Ceremony. Stop by the store, and say hello! We would love to have you! Even simply putting electronic writing device to electronic paper is pumping me up for camp! Do you feel it? Banging off rust here at the Voice of Golden Will take some  time, so forgive the writing. I haven't written much lately, having gone to a podcast format for the other two halves of the brain (Political and religious). 

I will be getting all of the staff gear out of storage in the next few weeks, making sure everything is laundered, and that it fits!?!

 This morning, walking around, making sure the slushie machine is on, and slushing. Trash is out, carboard is hidden away, it's finally here. The ninetieth season of Scouts gathering on the hills above the river. Camp Geiger and her memories... Today is not really a camp day, though for me it is just the first of many, as it is the day for the Tribal Feast. Where has time gone? It's almost over

 Webelos Weekend has begun. Extra time off for the staff, mostly back and getting ready to roll out the proverbial red carpet to this most important segment of youth. How important? For the program it is the easiest group to recruit into Scouts BSA, as they are already in the Scouting America family.  It cannot be understated how critical that recruitment phase is to the program. There are so many activities and programs that compete for time and dollars with Scouting, that we must keep those that are already in, in, as well as seeking out new members. There is no question that Scouting, like any organization needs membership to thrive, to be successful. Even more importantly, America, and the world, need a vibrant scouting program. A banner year

You have no idea the fear that I felt driving to Conclave this weekend. Was I concerned about the weather? Of course I was. But that was not what was driving the fear. Was it the truck I was driving, due to the weather? Not really, but by the time I left Paola, the tires had rounded out pretty well, after sitting for months. So what was it?  This year marks two very important milestones in the Pony Express Council of Scouting America, formerly the Boy Scouts of America. The first is that it is the 90th Anniversary of Camp Geiger, or Geiger Scout Reservation. With Scout Camps all over the country closing due to costs and fewer scouts, few shine like the Camp in St. Joseph, MO. First class amenities from Storm Shelters with running water, premier shooting ranges for target and range activities, to a COPE course that is the shining jewel of the physical facilities.
